Willie Mays was born in Alabama on May 6, 1931, to Ann and Willie Sr. His father was a baseball player for the local Negro team, and his mother was a superb high school basketball player.

He was reared by Sarah, his mother’s younger sister, and was inspired to play baseball by watching his father perform flawlessly. He attended Fairfield Industrial High School and participated in a variety of sports.

May’s first marriage (from 1956 to 1963) was to Margherite Wendell Chapman, with whom she adopted a son named Michael. In 1971, he married Mae Louise Allen. His second wife passed away in 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was known by the moniker ‘Say Hey Kid’. He has been on a variety of television shows, including ‘What’s My Line. In 2006, he served as the Tee Ball Commissioner for the White House Tee Ball Initiative.

Mays began his professional baseball career in 1947 with the Chattanooga Choo-Choos of Tennessee and then joined the Negro American League. He was eventually signed by the New York Giants and assigned to New Jersey’s Class-B affiliate.

Mays batted.247 with 68 RBI and 20 home runs in 121 games in 1951, the lowest total of his career, but he earned the Rookie of the Year Award.

He rose to prominence in Harlem. In 1952, he was enlisted into the Korean War and missed two seasons of football. In 1954, he returned to the Giants and batted.345 with 41 home runs, earning him the National League symbol of the year.

Mays hit 51 home runs in 1955 and 36 home runs and 40 bases the following season, becoming the second player to reach the “30-30 club.”

He was outstanding throughout the Giants’ three-year stay in New York. Mays earned the 1957 Gold Glove Award. He became the fourth player in Major League history to achieve the feat of 20-20-20, a feat that no one had accomplished in the previous 16 years.

Mays returned to San Francisco with the Giants in 1958 and competed for the National League batting title, collecting three hits and finishing with a career-high. 347 average. In 1961, he was named team captain.

The Giants finished third that season and won 85 games. Mays also had one of his best games of the year against the Milwaukee Braves, hitting four home runs. Mays won his second MVP title in 1965 and blasted his 500th career home run that year. He finished third in the National League MVP voting the following season.

Mays made his Mets debut that year and scored the game’s first run at Shea Stadium; the following season, in a game against the Cincinnati Reds, he blasted his 660th home run.




In 1973, the New York Mets organization honored Mays by hosting ‘Willie Mays Night,’ during which he announced his retirement and thanked his New York supporters.

May remained in the New York Mets organization from 1973 through 1979, upon his retirement from baseball, as the team’s hitting instructor. He shaped future Mets stars like Lee Mazzilli’s baseball careers.
