William Gibson Biography
William Gibson was born on March 17th, 1948. In spite of his South Carolina birthplace, Gibson spent much of his youth in Virginia owing to his father’s business demands, which required the family to relocate frequently. He lost his father at a restaurant while he was a student at Pines Elementary School.
When he was a senior in high school, Gibson had already determined he wanted to be a science fiction author and spent much of his time in his room writing. When reading Beat writers like Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William S. Burroughs in his second year of graduate school, he was inspired to write in his own unique style. This young man turned up to be an antisocial troublemaker who didn’t even believe in God as a child.
At Tucson, Arizona, his mother enrolled him in the Southern Arizona School for Boys. He lost his mother when he was eighteen, and as a result, he never finished high school. As a result of his isolation, he took out for California and Europe, where he encountered the ‘counterculture.’
In 1972, Gibson tied the knot with Deborah Jean Thompson, and the two made Vancouver, British Columbia, their home. Decades earlier, Gibson and Deborah had gotten to know one other well enough to take a trip to Europe together. Gibson emigrated to Canada in 1967 and endured a period of homelessness and unemployment. He was able to land a position as the manager of Toronto’s first head store after some time.
He was married with a child by the early 1970s, but he was still unemployed, so he had to rely on his wife’s income. The low-priced items from Salvation Army charity stores were his source of income later in the 1970s.

William Gibson Career
He went on to get a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of British Columbia, and he did so in 1977. It was largely for the financial help that he chose the course, therefore he signed up for it. He authored his first short tale, ‘Fragments of the Hologram Rose,’ after taking a science fiction course at school.
His first collection of short tales appeared in 1981 after he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. It was called ‘Omni and Universe 11’. One of his most well-known stories was ‘Burning Chrome,’ from the anthology. “Neuromancer” was one of the debut novels he authored for the third series of Ace Science Fiction Specials. It was published in 1984 and didn’t have an immediate impact. However, it quickly gained a following and went on to win several accolades for its success.
After ‘Neuromancer,’ he worked on ‘Count Zero,’ a sequel that was released in 1986. He finished the Sprawl Trilogy two years later with ‘Mona Lisa Overdrive,’ the third book in the series. Robert Longo’s text for his performance art, ‘Dream Jumbo: Working the Absolutes,’ was shown in 1989 at UCLA’s Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, California.
He wrote ‘The Angel of Goliad,’ a short fiction with Sterling in 1990. In the same year, the narrative was expanded into a novel called ‘The Difference Engine.’ The ‘Bridge Trilogy’ was the title of his second series. In 1993, he penned the series’ debut, ‘Virtual Light.’ In the same year, he contributed lyrics and sang on Yellow Magic Orchestra’s album “Technodon” as a guest vocalist.
In 1995, a film based on Gibson’s short story “John Mnemonic” was released under the same title. As the second book in his “Bridge Trilogy” series, “Idoru” came out in 1996, he penned it. Three years later, ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties,’ the series’ last book, was published. Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, and Asia Argento were the stars of his screenplay for the 1998 film ‘New Rose Hotel.’
He was a co-writer on two episodes of ‘The X-Files.’ Both ‘Kill Switch’ and ‘First Person Shooter,’ from seasons one and two, broadcast back to back in 1998 and 2000. With his novel ‘Pattern Recognition,’ Gibson made a comeback in 2003, after a hiatus of several years. The novel was his first to be set in the present day, a theme he would return to in later works.
In 2007, he released his debut album, titled ‘Spook Country. This novel, which was likewise a tremendous hit, was set in the same universe. In 2010, he published ‘Zero History,’ a novel in the same universe as his first two. All three of his novels went on to become bestsellers, establishing him as a well-known author.
In 2014, he published ‘The Peripheral,’ his newest book. It is set thirty years in the future, with one part of the tale taking place in that time period, and the other in a future time period.
