Tim Scott Career
Scott stood for the at-large position on the Charleston County Council in February 1995, which was left by Keith Summey, who resigned after being elected mayor of North Charleston. Scott won the seat as a Republican, winning over 80% of the vote in the white-majority district, which has voted Republican since the late twentieth century. He was South Carolina’s first black Republican elected to any office since the late 1800s.
Scott served on the County Council with Paul Thurmond, the son of United States Senator Strom Thurmond.
Scott ran for lieutenant governor, but after Republican incumbent Henry Brown announced his retirement, he changed his mind and decided to compete for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district. The 1st Congressional District is located in Charleston and covers over 3/4 of the state’s coastline.
Scott co-sponsored a poverty reform measure in March 2011 that would deny food stamps to families whose wages had been reduced to the threshold of eligibility because a family member was on strike. In July 2011, he submitted legislation to deprive the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) of the authority to prevent firms from moving to penalise workers who join unions or strike. The legislation’s argument is that government entities should not be able to instruct private businesses where they can operate. The measure, according to Scott, is a straightforward plan that would correct a deficiency in federal labour laws while also benefiting the national and local economy. The National Labor Relations Board recently rejected the transfer of a Boeing manufacturing plant from Washington to South Carolina.
Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina stated on December 17, 2012 that she will select Scott to succeed retiring Senator Jim DeMint. Along with Mo Cowan and subsequently Cory Booker, he was one of three black senators in the 113th Congress. Since Reconstruction, he is the first African American senator from the Southern United States.
Scott was the lone African-American senator two times, the first from January 2, 2013 to February 1, 2013, and the second from July 16, 2013 to October 31, 2013. He and Cowan were the first African-American senators to serve together.
Scott has been a member of the United States Senate since January 2017, and the first African-American to serve in both chambers of Congress. He is the first African-American senator from South Carolina, the first African-American senator elected from the South since 188, and the first African-American Republican to serve in the United States Senate since Edward Brooke left in 1979.
