Ted Turner was born on 19 November 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. His father was Robert Edward Turner, Jr., and his mother was Florence. He grew up the son of a wealthy entrepreneur who ran Turner Advertising. Ted, though an upstanding provider, had a rough youth.

When his family was away, he was sent to boarding school in Cincinnati. His father enrolled him at the Georgia Military Academy when he returned from war. His major was economics at Brown University, where he started college in 1956. It was against university policy for him to have a lady in his dorm room, which is why he was expelled.

After being expelled from the university, he joined his father’s business. He was named assistant manager of Turner’s Atlanta division thanks to his father. As a result, his father’s health took a major hit. In 1963, after his father’s suicide, Ted took control of the bankrupt business that bore his family’s name.
