Russell Carrington Wilson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 29, 1988, and was raised in Richmond, Virginia. A former NFL prospect turned lawyer, the second of three children born to Harrison III, and Wilson, a legal nurse consultant, Tammy, honed his athletic skills through competitions with his older brother, Harry.

Wilson played for the Richmond Collegiate School baseball, basketball, and football teams. As a senior quarterback, he was voted conference player of the year, capping the season by tossing a pair of touchdowns and running for 223 yards and three more scores in the winning state title game.

At North Carolina State University, Wilson became the first freshman quarterback to win all-ACC first-team honors, but his desire to continue playing baseball put him at odds with coach Tom O’Brien.

He butted heads with O’Brien over his decision to attend spring training with the Rockies in 2011, after Wilson was drafted by Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies in 2010. The quarterback agreed to transfer for his final year of college eligibility to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Wilson enjoyed an impressive senior year, leading the Badgers to the title of the Big 10 conference and setting an NCAA performance record for passing. Despite his accomplishments and apparent athletic ability, many found the 5’11 ‘Wilson to be too short for the NFL. After five other quarterbacks, he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 75th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Although the Seahawks already featured veteran quarterbacks in Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson, with his maturity, Wilson inspired coach Pete Carroll and claimed the starting job. Wilson rushed for three touchdowns in Week 14 while leading Seattle to a five-game winning streak to close out the season, and threw for four more the following week.

Wilson spurred the Seahawks to victories in 11 of their first 12 games and the NFC West crown the next season. Then, in a lopsided 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, the 25-year-old delivered a pair of touchdown passes, making him just the fourth quarterback to win a Super Bowl in his second season.
