Ron Wyden (Politician) Biography

Ronald Wyden was born in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Jewish parents Edith and Peter H. Wyden (formerly Weidenreich, 1923–1998), who had fled Nazi Germany. He grew raised in Palo Alto, California, and attended Palo Alto High School, where he played basketball. He obtained a basketball scholarship to the University of California, Santa Barbara, and later transferred to Stanford University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1971. In 1974, he graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law with a Juris Doctorate.

In a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by Bob Packwood in January 1996, Wyden defeated Oregon State Senate President Gordon Smith by just over 18,000 votes, owing largely to Wyden’s overwhelming victory in Multnomah County, where he received over 89,000 votes. Smith was elected to the Senate in November 1996 to replace retiring Senator Mark Hatfield, and he and Wyden served together until Smith was defeated by Democrat Jeff Merkley in 2008.

Ron Wyden Career

In February 2001, following the release of a report by the US Department of Transportation’s Inspector General’s Office on airlines providing “untimely, incomplete, or unreliable reports” on flight delays and cancellations, Wyden stated that the issue amounted to a “failure to communicate honestly about delays and cancellations” as well as the bumping of passengers from flights, and that Congress was capable of addressing the issue. Wyden announced in March that he supports repealing a federal rule that requires commercial pilots to retire at the age of 60.

Inspector General Kenneth M. Mead testified to Wyden in May 2001 that airlines had purposely delayed some nighttime flights to accommodate late-arriving customers who would otherwise have had to wait until the next morning without informing passengers of the change in schedule. Days later, during a speech to the International Aviation Club, Wyden cautioned airlines that if they continued to fight little efforts like telling the public about perpetually late planes, they would face more onerous obligations in the future.

Wyden introduced the Internet Nondiscrimination Act of 2006 on March 2, 2006, legislation that would prevent network operators from compensating firms “for speedier delivery of their material to customers over the internet or favouring certain content over others.” A two-tier system, he said, “could have a chilling effect on small mom and pop businesses that can’t afford the priority lane, leaving these smaller businesses no chance of competing against the Wal-Marts of the world,” and that technology neutrality allowed “small businesses to thrive on the Internet.”

In August 2016, in response to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns, Wyden and Chris Murphy announced that they would introduce Wyden’s bill, which, if passed, would require major-party presidential nominees to disclose at least three years of tax returns, allowing the Treasury Department to release Trump’s returns despite Trump’s refusal. Americans expected candidates to share their tax returns, according to Wyden, who called Trump’s defiance of tradition “an unique occasion where a long-standing precedent has been broken, and it creates significant hazard to the public to keep this material private.”

Following his confirmation by the Senate Finance Committee on August 1, 2018, Wyden stated his intention to place a formal hold on Treasury deputy secretary candidate Justin Muzinich. He also reaffirmed his support for IRS General Counsel candidate Michael Desmond, and he blasted Treasury’s study of indexing capital gains taxes to inflation as a way for the rich to save even more money while also potentially breaking the law.
