In Los Angeles, King was born and grew up in the View Park–Windsor Hills neighborhood. Gloria (Cain), a special education teacher, and Thomas King, an electrician, are her parents.  In 1979, King’s parents separated and divorced.

Reina King, King’s younger sister, was a former actress who participated in the television show What’s Happening Now!! King attended Westchester High School, where he received his diploma in 1988.

Following that, she pursued a degree in communications at the University of Southern California but dropped out after two years when she realized she wanted to pursue acting full-time. From 1997 until 2007, King was married to Ian Alexander, who died in 2007. They are the parents of a son.

Along with the films Boyz n the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), and Ray (2004), he has also appeared in two sequels to the comedy Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous (2005).
