When Jackson was five years old, his family purchased their first television, and the world of television captivated his young imagination, especially a futuristic English sci-fi show called Thunderbirds (1965-66). At the age of nine, Jackson became fascinated with movies after watching the original King Kong. “I believe I still have a rotting King Kong puppet somewhere in my basement,” he confessed. “It was about a foot high, and I made a cardboard cutout of the Empire State Building for him to stand on, as well as a Manhattan backdrop.”

Jackson’s parents got a Super 8 movie camera as a present in 1969, the same year he saw King Kong. “Now I can get my spaceships that I’ve made, my models, and I can film them, just like Thunderbirds,” Jackson recalls thinking. By his early teens, he was using his friends as actors, his parents’ house as a backdrop, and anything he might concoct in the kitchen for special effects. “I liked a World War II drama film with my friends in old army uniforms—kids with big helmets and uniforms that don’t match very well—running around, digging trenches in my parents’ backyard,” he remembered.

He went to Kapiti College, a state-run secondary school, but dropped out when he was 16 to work and support his film hobby. “All I wanted to do was get out of school and into a job, any job,” he said, “so I could start saving up for the next piece of film equipment I wanted.”

Jackson got a job at a local newspaper as a photographic lithographer. He worked six days a week while living at home in order to save as much money as he could for a high-tech camera. Jackson set out to make a film after purchasing the required equipment. Jackson wrote and directed a full-length comedy film about flesh-eating aliens over the next few years, filming only on Sundays, his one day off.
