Olivia Colman was born on 30 January 1974 in Norwich, the daughter of Mary and Keith Colman, a chartered surveyor. She attended Norwich High School for Girls and Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk, both of which are private schools.

At the age of 16, she played Jean Brodie in a school production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She attributes her decision to pursue acting professionally to her mother’s halted career as a ballet dancer.

Colman studied primary education for a period at Cambridge’s Homerton College before enrolling at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where she graduated in 1999. Under the stage name “Colly,” she appeared on Channel 4’s The Word in 1995 and auditioned for the Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club, where she met future co-stars, David Mitchell and Robert Webb.

On stage as Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners, Colman met a third-year law student who had been disillusioned with the profession and chose to write. Colman married Sinclair in August 2001 and the couple has three children together.
