Mohan Babu was born on 19 March 1952 in Modhugulapalem, Chittoor, Madras State, India. He was born in the Modhugulapalem village near the banks of the river Swarnamukhi to Manchu Narayanaswamy Naidu and Manchu Lakshmamma. Manchu Ranganatha Chowdary, Manchu Ramachandra Chowdary, Manchu Krishna, and his sister Vijaya were his three younger brothers.

He went to Tirupati’s S.P.J.N.M High School after finishing primary school in Yerpedu village. Mohan Babu developed an interest in the stage as a child and began acting in school plays at the age of 14. His father, a headmaster, was adamant that his son pursue a career in academia. Mohan Babu moved to Chennai during this time and earned a degree in physical education from the YMCA College of Physical Education.

For several years, Mohan Babu was a physical education teacher at the YMCA college of physical education. Mohan Babu, who was attracted to the arts as a child and felt that the film industry was the place for him, began visiting numerous studios in Chennai in search of jobs. Finally, in 1969, he was given the chance to work as an apprentice with director Lakshmi Deepak, launching his career in the film industry. He worked behind the scenes for several years until his desire to act and express himself led him to appear on screen in the 1974 films Kannavari Kalalu and Alluri Seetha Rama Raju.

During this time, Mohan Babu met Dasari Narayana Rao, a script writer in Tollywood at the time. This will turn out to be the most important occurrence of his professional life. The 1975 film Swargam Narakam, directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, was Mohan Babu’s first major break as an actor. Dasari cast him as a villain in the film, which went on to be a huge hit.

He went on to feature as the leading actor in films such as Khaidi Kalidasu, Ketugadu, Gruhapravesham, Assembly Rowdy, Allari mogudu, and several others after starring as a comedy-villain in a variety of films. Following his breakthrough in Telugu cinema, Mohan Babu was attracted to the happenings in Tamil cinema as an art lover. Sivaji Ganesan introduced him to the Tamil film industry, and he went on to star in over 20 Tamil films as part of Mohan Babu’s filmography, playing a variety of roles.

He released Son of India (2021 film), a Telugu film directed by Diamond Ratnababu and produced by Vishnu Manchu, in October 2020. The film’s script was composed by Mohan Babu.
