Mitt Romney (Politician) Biography

Mitt Romney was born in Harper University Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, on March 12, 1947. He was born to George W. Romney, an automobile entrepreneur, and Lenore Romney, a former actress and homemaker. His mother was from Logan, Utah, while his father was born in a Mormon colony in Chihuahua, Mexico, to American parents.

He is predominantly of English heritage, with Scottish and German background. He is a fifth-generation LDS Church member, the great-grandson of Miles Park Romney and the great-great-grandson of Miles Romney, who joined to the church in the church’s first decade. Parley P. Pratt, another great-great-grandfather, was a leader in the early church.

Margo, Jane, and Scott are Romney’s three elder siblings. Mitt was roughly six years younger than the others. His parents named him after his father’s cousin, Milton “Mitt” Romney, a former quarterback for the Chicago Bears, and a family friend, industrialist J. Willard Marriott.

Romney was known as “Billy” until kindergarten, when he said that he preferred the name “Mitt.” The family relocated from Detroit to Bloomfield Hills in 1953, and his father was named chairman and CEO of American Motors the following year, helping the firm avoid bankruptcy and return to prosperity. Mitt admired his father, who had become a nationally renowned person in print and on television by 1959.

Romney attended public primary schools until seventh grade, when he enrolled in Cranbrook School, a private affluent boys’ preparatory school a few miles from his home, as one of only a few Mormon pupils. Many of the pupils there come from much more fortunate homes than his.

He wasn’t extremely athletic, and he didn’t stand out academically either. He served as an intern in the governor’s office after participating in his father’s victorious 1962 Michigan gubernatorial campaign. When Romney’s freshly elected father began spending most of his time in the state government, he moved to Cranbrook.

Mitt Romney Career

Romney was a member of the Cranbrook cheering squad and assisted in the management of the ice hockey team. He joined the cross country running squad during his senior year. He was a member of 11 school groups and groups, including the Blue Key Club, which he founded.

His academic record improved during his final year there, although he still fell short of greatness. During his time at Cranbrook, Romney was involved in a number of pranks. He then apologised for them, claiming that some of them went too far. He began dating Ann Davies, a student at the exclusive Kingswood School, Cranbrook’s sister school, in March of his senior year. Around the time he graduated from high school in June 1965, the two got unofficially engaged.

In 1969, he married Ann Davies, with whom he had five kids. By 1971, he had taken part in both of his parents’ political campaigns.

In 1977, he joined Bain & Company in Boston as a management consultant. He was the company’s chief executive officer (CEO) when it emerged from a financial crisis. He co-founded and oversaw the spin-off business Bain Capital, a private equity investment business that grew to be one of the country’s largest. Romney was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), serving as bishop of his ward and subsequently as stake president over an area that included Boston and several of its suburbs.

Romney was the Republican contender in the 1994 United States Senate race in Massachusetts after standing down from Bain Capital and his local leadership role in the LDS Church. He returned to Bain Capital after losing to five-term incumbent Ted Kennedy. Years later, he relaunched his political career after a successful term as president and CEO of the then-struggling Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002 and assisted in the development and signing of a health-care reform bill that gave near-universal access to health insurance through state-level subsidies and individual obligations to buy insurance. He also presided over the closure of corporate tax loopholes and the reduction of a projected $1.2–1.5 billion deficit through a mixture of expenditure cutbacks, higher levies, and closing of expenditure loopholes.

He did not run for reelection in 2006, instead focused on his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. Despite winning multiple primaries and caucuses, Romney was eventually defeated by Senator John McCain for the Republican presidential nomination.

Romney’s substantial personal worth, estimated in 2012 at $190–250 million, aided in the financing of his political efforts prior to 2012, when he ran for and won the Republican presidential nomination for the second time, becoming the first Mormon to be nominated by a major political party. He lost the election against incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama by a margin of 206–332 in the Electoral College and 47–51 percent in the popular vote.

Romney announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Orrin Hatch in the 2018 election after reestablishing residency in Utah; he beat state representative Mike Kennedy in the Republican primary and Democratic contender Jenny Wilson in the general election.

He became only the third person in history to be elected governor of one state while while serving as a senator for another. On January 3, 2019, Romney was sworn in as President of the United States. He voted to convict Trump in the first impeachment trial, making him the only senator in US history to vote to convict a president of his own party. During Trump’s second impeachment trial, Romney voted to convict him for the second time.
