Milan Kundera Biography

Milan Kundera was born in 1929, at Královo Pole, in the Czechoslovak neighborhood of Purkyňova 6. His father, Ludvík Kundera, was a leading musicologist in Bruno and ahead of the academy of music. Ludvik transferred his musical skills onto his son, and subsequently, Milan received musicological instruction.

The study of musicology also affected his work, since his compositions contain numerous musical references. In his teens, he became a passionate supporter of the Czechoslovak Communist Party.

He was educated early in a secondary school in Bruno. He then traveled to Prague, where he studied literature and aesthetics at Charles University. He was soon transferred, however, to the Faculty of Film at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. Here he attended a film direction course and wrote the script.

After graduating in 1952, he received courses on global literature from the same school. Four years later, he joined the Communist Party in 1956.

Kundera’s early literary work is strongly pro-communist. In the 1950s, he wrote a number of plays, essays, and literary works. He also produced a few books of poetry but was known for his collection of short stories, Laughable Loves. He was also an editor for literary publications such as Literarni Noviny and Listy. His works appear to resist the categorization of the conventional genre. Kundera eschewed political criticism in his later writings and concentrated on the philosophical aspects.

He was strongly influenced by the fiction of Robert Musil and the philosophy of Nietzsche, which follows a constant intellectual detour. The Renaissance writers, Franz Kafka, Martin Heidegger, Miguel de Cervantes, and Giovanni Boccaccio are some of the primary inspirations.

Kundera first published books in the Czech but, since he relocated to France permanently, he began to write in French in 1993. In fact, he revised the French translation of his previous books in the 1980s. Moreover, he now believes himself to be a French rather than a Czech novelist. The Joke is noted as the first novel by Kundera released in 1967.




The novel concentrates on Stalinism and satirizes tyranny in the communist age. His blatant critique of the Soviet invasion of the book led to his works being banned in Czechoslovakia. In 1973 his second work of fiction, Life is Elsewhere, was published in French by Kundera.

It describes the story of Jaromil, an idealistic poet, and his participation in the political scandal of the Second World War and beyond.

After authoring several contentious political works, Kundera explores the field of philosophy in his The Unsupportable Lightness of Being. The book was published in 1984 while it was in France already. It analyses Nietzsche’s idea of everlasting return through which a single event or being is destined to reoccur in an endless world.

Followed by Immortality (1990), which once again focuses on philosophy rather than politics. Milan Kundera was given the Jerusalem Prize, the Austrian State Prize, the Czech State Literature Prize, and the Ovid Prize for his significant contribution.
