Mike Lee (Politician) Biography
Mike Lee was born on June 4, 1971, in Mesa, Arizona, to Janet and Rex E. Lee. When his father became the first dean of Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, his family relocated to Provo, Utah, a year later. Lee spent nearly half of his boyhood in Utah, and the other half in McLean, Virginia, a Washington, D.C. suburb. His father worked as an Assistant United States Attorney General from 1975 to 1976, and subsequently as the United States Solicitor General. Lee is descended from English, Swiss, and Danish ancestors.
Lee is the son of Rex E. Lee, the founding dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and president of Brigham Young University under President Ronald Reagan.
In 1993, Lee married Sharon Burr. He has three children. Former Democratic Senators Mark Udall of Colorado and Tom Udall of New Mexico, as well as former Republican Senator Gordon H. Smith of Oregon, are all second cousins.
Lee grew up three houses down from Senator Robert Byrd and went to school with Senator Strom Thurmond’s daughter, Nancy Moore Thurmond. Josh Reid, Harry Reid’s son, was also a buddy of his.
Lee attended Brigham Young University after graduating from Timpview High School in 1989. During the 1993–94 academic year, he was president of BYUSA and student body president, working with his father, who was then president of BYU. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1994. Lee went on to BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he was a member of the BYU Law Review and received his Juris Doctorate in 1997.

Mike Lee Career
From 1997 to 1998, Lee clerked for Judge Dee Benson of the United States District Court for the District of Utah. Lee went to work for the American legal firm Sidley Austin in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in appellate and Supreme Court litigation.
Lee returned to Utah some years later as an Assistant United States Attorney in Salt Lake City, where he prepared papers and argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. From January 2005 until June 2006, he worked as general counsel to Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., before returning to Washington for a one-year clerkship with Alito at the Supreme Court. The following year, Lee returned to private practise in Utah, joining the Salt Lake branch of Howrey LLP.
Lee also represented EnergySolutions Inc., a Class A low-level radioactive waste facility provider, in a widely publicised conflict with the Utah public and public authorities that sparked controversy during his first Senate election. The corporation was authorised to store radioactive waste in Utah as long as it was low-grade “Class A” material, according to Utah’s authorities. Many people opposed the corporation storing garbage from Italy since the material was foreign and may be more radioactive than allowed.
The controversy was finally resolved when EnergySolutions abandoned its plans to deposit Italian radioactive waste in Utah, with the 10th U.S. Circuit court subsequently holding that the compact had the authority to prevent foreign nuclear waste from being housed in Utah.
Lee is a Republican who leans to the right. The NOMINATE methodology was employed by the New York Times to rank Senate members by ideology, and Lee came out on top as the Senate’s most conservative member. Lee is on the right end of the political spectrum, to the right of most Republicans but to the left of a few Republican senators, according to GovTrack’s 2017 research.
As of July 2018, according to FiveThirtyEight, which records Congressional votes, Lee voted 81.3 percent of the time with Trump’s opinions on legislation.
Lee declared on Fox News in March 2021 that the For the People Act was “rotten to the core” and “crafted in Hell by the devil himself.” The bill aims to increase voting rights, modify campaign finance laws to diminish money’s power in politics, restrict political gerrymandering, and establish new ethical regulations for federal officials.
Conservatives, including Lee, have attacked it, claiming that its provisions unlawfully transfer electoral power from state governments to the central government.
Lee entered the Republican caucus process in 2010 during the Tea Party movement to oppose incumbent three-term Republican senator Bob Bennett. During the Utah Republican Party Convention’s selection process, he beat Bennett and businessman Tim Bridgewater.
Lee beat Democratic opponent Sam Granato in the general election after winning the Republican primary. When Representative Rob Bishop retires in January 2021, he was re-elected in 2016 and became the dean of Utah’s congressional delegation. From 2019 to 2021, Lee was the chairman of the Joint Economic Committee.
