Michael Dean Crapo is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the senior United States senator representing Idaho, a position he has held since 1998. From 1993 until 1999, he served as the United States Representative representing Idaho’s 2nd congressional district as a Republican.

Crapo is a graduate of Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School. He was born in Idaho Falls. Throughout the 1980s, he practised law in his hometown while simultaneously participating in local Republican politics. Terry Crapo, his brother, was the majority leader of the Idaho House of Representatives from 1968 to 1972 and a powerful political figure until his death in 1982 from leukaemia. Crapo was elected to the Idaho Senate in 1984 after his brother died. From 1988 until 1992, he was Senate President pro tempore.

Crapo was elected to represent Idaho’s 2nd congressional district in the House of Representatives in 1992, when an open seat in Congress became available. After three terms in the House, he ran for the available Senate seat in 1998 when Dirk Kempthorne resigned to run for governor of Idaho. Crapo was elected with 70% of the vote, making him the first Mormon to serve in the Senate from Idaho. In 2004, he won 99 percent of the vote over his single opponent, Democratic write-in candidate Scott McClure. He was re-elected with 71 percent of the vote in 2010 and 66 percent of the vote in 2016.

Crapo worked as a law clerk for Judge James M. Carter of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for a year after graduating from law school. He returned to Idaho to practise law, joining his brother Terry Crapo’s firm in Idaho Falls, Holden Kidwell Hahn & Crapo. He became involved in Republican Party bids for seats in the state legislature in the 1980s. His brother was a rising star in Idaho politics, serving as majority leader in the Idaho House of Representatives for four years (1968 to 1972).

Mike ran for an available seat in the Idaho Senate after Terry died of leukaemia in 1982. In 1984, he was elected to the State Senate and served until 1992. Senate President pro tempore Jim Risch unexpectedly lost reelection to the Idaho Senate in 1988, and Crapo was elected president by his colleagues. From 1988 until 1992, he was the Senate’s pro tempore president.

With fewer than two months until the 2020 presidential election, Crapo expressed support for a Senate vote on Trump’s nominee to replace the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September 2020, once a “well-qualified candidate” was presented.
