Michael Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on February 26, 1953, to Helen and George Bolotin, who were devout Jews. At the age of thirteen, he lost his father in a divorce that took place while he was a child.

For the better part of a decade, Bolton and Maureen McGuire were married. They have three children, Isa, Holly, and Taryn, who were all born two years apart. When his daughter Taryn was born in October 2010, he became a grandpa for the first time. He has six grandkids, ranging in age from 2 to 8, as of February 2019.

The adult contemporary/jazz saxophonist Kenny G introduced Bolton to actress Nicollette Sheridan in 1992; they dated until 1995, then split up, reconnected in 2005, and became engaged in March 2006; however, they broke it up in August 2008.

In 1975, Bolton released his first album. Using his family name of Bolotin, he self-titled this debut album. Blackjack, a hard rock band that opened for Ozzy Osbourne on a tour, was one of his early bands.
