Melanie Janine Brown was born on 29 May 1975 in Harehills, Leeds, England. Her father Martin is a Nevisian from the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts and Nevis, while her mother Andrea is English.

She was born and raised in Burley, Leeds. Danielle Brown is her younger sister. Melanie attended ‘Intake High School’ in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England prior to beginning her career as a vocalist. Brown is the mother of three children and has been married twice.
