Margaret Wood, Hassan’s mother, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. She is the daughter of Margaret and Robert Coldwell Wood, a political scientist who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Frank Wood, a Tony Award-winning actor, is one of her two siblings.

Wood was born and raised in Lincoln, Massachusetts. She used to sing in school choruses and at church as a youngster. Maggie’s parents were both political activists, and she worked as a mailer collector for the League of Women Voters. She graduated with the Class of 1976 from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Wood then went to Brown University, where she majored in history and received her B.A. in 1980. She met her future husband, Thomas Hassan, who was also a student at the institution, when she was there.

Thomas, Hassan’s spouse, was the principal of Phillips Exeter Academy from 2008 to 2015 and is the president of School Year Abroad as of 2016. The Hassans did not live at the Governor’s Home when he was principal; instead, they were furnished with a colonial mansion on the school grounds as part of her husband’s employment.

Hassan started working at Sullivan, Weinstein and McQuay, a Boston corporate defence and commercial law company, in 1996. Governor Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire nominated her as a citizen adviser to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission’s Advisory Committee in 1999.

Hassan declared her campaign for the United States Senate in 2016 on October 5, 2015. She ran against Kelly Ayotte, the incumbent Republican senator from New Hampshire. The contest was widely regarded as one of the most competitive in the United States Senate this year.

Hassan received support from EMILY’s List, a pro-choice Democratic political action organisation that also backed her two gubernatorial campaigns. In the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries, Hassan backed Hillary Clinton. If elected to the Senate, she stated climate change and reproductive rights will be her main concerns.

Hassan campaigned for the United States Senate in 2016 and narrowly beat Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte by approximately a thousand votes. She’s working alongside another former governor, Jeanne Shaheen. Hassan and Shaheen are the only two women ever elected governor and senator in the United States.

Hassan was proclaimed the winner on November 9, the day following Election Day. That evening, Ayotte surrendered, opting not to demand a recount.
