Oates went to Syracuse University after high school where she studied English, where she studied.

Prior to her senior year, she was co-winner of the Mademoiselle magazine-sponsored story contest. She finished high school in 1960 and graduated from a graduate school when she met Raymond Smith, a professor of English, in the University of Wisconsin. In 1961 they got married.
