Joyce Carol Oates Biography

Joyce Carol Oates, the eldest child of Frederic and Caroline Oates’ three children, was born at Lockport, New York, on 16 June 1938. Caroline’s parents owned the family on a farm. Joyce’s father, and his mother, was a homemaker, was a tool designer. Oates was a thoughtful boy who read a lot. She recounted stories by sketching photos even before she could write. She stated her upbringing “was stupid, average, nothing interested in others,” yet she acknowledged that “I was so much afraid.”

Oates published her first novel in 1953 at the age of fifteen but was rejected by publishers who deemed the theme of rehabilitation of a drug-sufficient (the restoration to a productive condition), too depriment for teenagers. Oates went to Syracuse University after high school where she studied English, where she studied.

Prior to her senior year, she was co-winner of the Mademoiselle magazine-sponsored story contest. She finished high school in 1960 and graduated from a graduate school when she met Raymond Smith, a professor of English, in the University of Wisconsin. In 1961 they got married.
