He was born on 8 February 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. When he was just four years old, the family settled in DeSoto County, Mississippi.
He was originally interested in becoming a baseball player, yet his aspirations quickly altered when he began his training at Mississippi Community college in the northwest.

As an adolescent, he has been employed in several strange professions, including watering shrubs, collaborating with the asphalt crew, and becoming a departmental salesperson. All these occupations led him to a ‘madness,’ when he resolved to really follow his college degree.

He subsequently moved to Delta State University but finished his studies in 1977 with a B.S. in Accounting from Mississippi State University. After graduating from the University Of Mississippi School of Law, he studied civil litigation and completed his JD degree in 1983.

On May 8, 1981, he married and had two children with Renee Jones. In their leisure time, the family relocates to Charlottesville, Virginia, between their properties in Oxford, Mississippi, and their other residences. He is one of the boards of the ‘The Innocence Mission’ which has been a project to exonerate criminals who have been wrongly condemned for DNA testing. At the University of Mississippi, there is a ‘John Grisham Room’ containing everything Grisham has authored.

A young Grisham could not have envisioned becoming an author since until after a professional career in law he had acquired no interest in writing. Before ultimately graduating, John drove through three different institutions. He studied in 1971 at Mississippi State University, graduating from the Mississippi State School of Law and a B.S. in accounts in 1981 to become a tax lawyer.

He altered his views, though, and shifted focus in ordinary civil disputes. John’s Juris Ph.D. is a criminal law specialist. On his return to Southaven, he began a modest legal business. After being elected in 1983, Grisham served in the Mississippi House. He then became the Vice President of the Repartition and Election Committee.

An example of Grisham’s inspiration is writing his debut novel, A Time for Kill (1989). Able to print a restricted number of copies, the book ultimately found an obscure publisher rejected by 28 companies. Without a well-established publisher marketing, John had to ask retailers to store his book straight away.

In fact, Grisham began to begin on a second novel, The Firm, despite selling just 5,000 copies. His office in Southaven was shuttered, and he decided not to seek re-election. John moved with his family to Oxford, Mississippi, to allow them more time to focus on writing. The company (1991) won its place on the New York Times list of best sellers for 47 weeks and the top selling newspaper in 1991.

Grisham continued to play a role in legal excitement and created beautifully written artworks like The Client (1993), The Chamber (1994), The Runaway Jury (1996), The Partner (1997), The Street Lawyer (1998), The Testoment (1999), The Summons (2002), The Last Jury (2004), The Broker (2005). In 2001, Grisham expanded his legal expertise to cover other topics, in particular his longtime enthusiasm for baseball. His first non-legal novel was the Painted House (2001), followed by Skipping Christmas (2001), Bleachers (2003), and Pizza Playing (2007).

In 2005, John Grisham received the Tulsa Library Trust Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. In the Mississippi State University Libraries, a room of John Grisham is preserved in the Manuscript Division, where documents produced by the author as the State Representative of Mississippi are archived.

Grisham is a keen advocate of young authors who donate bursaries and residencies in the English and Graduate Creative Writing Departments at the University of Mississippi.
