John Barrasso (Politician) Biography
John Barrasso was born on July 21, 1952, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Louise M. and John Anthony Barrasso, Jr. are his parents’ names. He has Italian ancestors. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970, before it combined with Holy Name High School in 2011 to create Berks Catholic High School. Barrasso spent two years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before moving to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1974. In 1978, he graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine with an M.D. In New Haven, Connecticut, he completed his residency at Yale Medical School.
John Barrasso relocated to Wyoming with his then-wife, Linda Nix, in 1983, after finishing his residency at Yale. He went to work for a private orthopaedic clinic in Casper and was the chief of staff at Wyoming Medical Center for a period. He was the Wyoming Medical Society’s State President, the President of the National Association of Physician Broadcasters, and a member of the American Medical Association’s Council on Ethics and Judicial Affairs.
Barrasso is the father of three children. He is divorced from Linda Nix and married to Bobbi Brown, his second wife. Barrasso and Brown, a breast cancer survivor and the director of Barrasso’s state senate offices at the time, announced their engagement on August 11, 2007, at Cheyenne’s annual Race for the Cure. Brown subsequently resigned from Barrasso’s state Senate office. They married in Thermopolis on January 1, 2008.

John Barrasso Career
Barrasso was first elected to the Wyoming Senate in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. He was the chairman of the Transportation and Highways Committee during his service in the State Senate. Senator Craig L. Thomas died earlier that month, and Governor Dave Freudenthal appointed Barrasso to replace him on June 22, 2007. Because the seat was vacated by a Republican, Freudenthal was limited to three candidates picked by the Republican State Central Committee under state law.
Former State Treasurer Cynthia Lummis of Cheyenne, subsequently a member of the United States House of Representatives and Wyoming’s junior senator, and former Republican State Chairman and lobbyist Tom Sansonetti, a former aide to Thomas, were among the others. Matt Mead, the grandson of former Senator Clifford P. Hansen, campaigned for governor, as did Ray Hunkins, a Wheatland rancher and lawyer, who ran in 2006. Lummis was elected to Congress in 2008 and to the Senate in 2020, where she now serves with Barrasso. Mead was elected governor of Wyoming in 2010, and Lummis was elected to Congress in 2008. Barrasso stated at the time of his appointment that he will run in the November 2008 special election to replace the balance of Thomas’ term.
Barrasso declared on May 19, 2008, that he will run for the balance of Thomas’s term in the general election in 2008, albeit he had already expressed his intention before to his appointment. Tom Sansonetti, one of Freudenthal’s three Republican candidates, has stated that he would not run against Barrasso in the primary. Cynthia Lummis, the other contender for selection, ran for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin in the state’s at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives.
Barrasso was a vocal opponent of the CIA’s Center on Climate Change and National Security, which was established in 2009. He presented legislation in 2011 that would restrict the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating carbon dioxide emissions.
Barrasso rejects the overwhelming scientific agreement that climate change is growing, dangerous, and mostly human-caused climate change. Barrasso has a 7% lifetime score on the League of Conservation Voters’ National Environmental Scorecard as of October 2020. He was a vocal opponent of President Barack Obama’s policy on climate change.
Senators Barrasso, Enzi, and Pat Roberts have filed legislation to eliminate electric vehicle tax benefits. He wrote an op-ed in the New York Times in December 2018 asserting his conviction in climate science and change, but opposing a carbon charge and dividend.
Barrasso was one of 22 senators who signed a letter to President Donald Trump encouraging him to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement. Barrasso has received nearly $585,000 from the oil and gas business since 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. He earned approximately $690,000 in contributions from oil and gas firms alone in 2018.
Barrasso sponsored a bill in September 2020 that would drastically reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons, which are used in refrigerants and other purposes and have contributed to global warming. He was joined in voting for the measure by sixteen other Republican senators. US industries, environmentalists, and conservative organisations seemed to have worked together to convince those politicians.
