Jessica Hilda Mauboy was born in Darwin, Northern Territory on August 4, 1989, to Ferdy and Therese. Her father, an electrician, is from West Timor, Indonesia, and her mother is from the indigenous Kuku Yalanji people of Far North Queensland, Australia’s rainforest regions.
She is her parents’ fourth child and has three elder sisters – Sandra, Jenny, and Catherine – as well as one younger sister, Sophia.
She attended Darwin’s Wulagi Primary School and Sanderson High School but dropped out at the age of eleven.
She was raised in a musical environment that has been dubbed the “noisiest house on the block”; her entire family was musically inclined, with her mother frequently singing and her father playing guitar.
Since she was a child, she has sang in the local church choir alongside her grandma Harriett.
She won the inaugural Telstra ‘Road to Tamworth’ competition at the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festival in Tamworth, New South Wales, at the age of 14.

Jessica Mauboy’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing at the audition for season four of ‘Australian Idol’ in 2006 delighted all three judges, and she advanced to the semi-finals, where she finished in the top twelve.
Despite a bad throat that nearly eliminated her, she continuously advanced to the finals but finished as runner-up to Damien Leith.
In December 2006, two weeks following the conclusion of ‘Australian Idol,’ she got a record deal with Sony Music Australia and made her music industry debut on February 24, 2007, with the live album ‘The Journey.’
