Jack Reed Career

Senator Claiborne Pell, Rhode Island’s longest-serving senator and the 13th longest-serving senator in US history, announced his retirement in 1996, prompting Reed to launch his candidacy. Reed received 86 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, defeating the Republican opponent, Rhode Island General Treasurer Nancy Mayer, by a margin of 63 percent to 35 percent.

Reed ran for re-election to a second term. In the Democratic primary, he ran unopposed, while his Republican opponent was Robert Tingle, acasino pit manager who ran unsuccessfully for the state’s 2nd congressional district in 2000. Reed won by a margin of 78 percent to 22%.
Reed campaigned for re-election for a fourth term. According to polls, he has a 29 percent to 65 percent lead over potential Republican opponents. Reed faced former Congressional contender and former Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Mark Zaccaria in the main election, which he won by a landslide, 71% to 29%.

Reed has been suggested as a possible Secretary of Defense on numerous occasions. He declined Obama’s offer to succeed Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense in late 2010. Leon Panetta was eventually appointed to the position. Reed was suggested as a prospective choice for the position, as well as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, when Obama was re-elected in 2012 and Panetta announced his intent to retire. He denied interest in either role once more.

Reed was rumoured to be on Obama’s shortlist again when Panetta’s successor, Chuck Hagel, announced his retirement in December 2014. Reed’s confirmation was believed to be a “foregone conclusion” despite the Republican takeover of the Senate in the 2014 elections. A representative for him reiterated his denial of interest, adding, “Senator Reed enjoys his work and hopes to serve the people of Rhode Island in the United States Senate for many years to come.

He has stated unequivocally that he does not want to be considered for the role of Secretary of Defense or any other cabinet position. He recently asked the people of Rhode Island to re-elect him for another six-year term, and he intends to keep his word.”

Ted Nesi of WPRI-TV listed some reasons why Reed would be uninterested in cabinet roles on November 24, 2014, citing his “secure seat,” his status as one of the state’s most popular lawmakers, his fondness for working in the Senate, and his love for housing policy. He came to the conclusion that “Regardless of how much Reed’s aides grumble privately about another round of defence secretary speculation, they must recognise that each occurrence is an indication of the senator’s excellent image in Washington and Obama’s regard for him.

Reed has generally favoured fair trade policies over similar free trade programmes. He opposed the president’s ability to “fast-track” normalised trade ties by voting no. Reed voted in support of repairing commercial relations with China while opposing CAFTA and similar free trade initiatives for Chile, Singapore, Peru, and Oman. He’s also a staunch supporter of employees who want to form unions, and he’s condemned government and company intervention in these efforts. Reed is in favour of raising the minimum wage and unemployment benefits.

In July 2019, Reed and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote to Acting Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kevin McAleenan, requesting an explanation of the DHS’s actions in response to “unexpected behaviour” of voting equipment in Durham County, North Carolina during the 2016 presidential election, and stating that it was “unacceptably late.” “It’s critical that we learn everything we can about the scope of the attacks we faced in 2016, and that these lessons are disseminated widely so that our country is fully prepared for the 2020 elections.
