Herta Muller Biography

Herta Müller was born in Nitchidorf, Romania on August 17, 1953. Her family was a member of a minority population that spoke German. Herta came from a difficult household. Her father was an alcoholic and a farmworker.

He volunteered for Hitler’s Waffen-SS during the Second World War. He was later caught and held as a prisoner of war in England. After his release, he supported himself by driving trucks.

Herta’s mother, on the other hand, was one of the 10,000 German-speaking minorities transported to the Soviet Union’s forced labor camps in 1945.

She was about seventeen years old at the time and endured ordeals until her release in 1950. Herta, who was born in 1953, recalls her mother as elderly and broken.

Herta struggled as a child to understand that his father was a member of the SS and frequently prosecuted him for his involvement. Neither could she accept that her mother and several other women and children were arbitrarily sent to a Soviet work camp.

In 1973, she enrolled in Timișoara’s West University, where she studied German and Romanian literature. She joined an organization named Aktionsgruppe Banat at university to express her resistance to Ceauşescu’s regime.

Herta began working as a translator at an engineering factory following graduation. Here, she was solicited by Romania’s secret police, Securitate, to spy on her coworkers, particularly on international visitors.

She refused to cooperate and was thus fired from her job in 1977. She then became a kindergarten teacher and supplemented her income by teaching German. However, she was unable to secure regular employment. Despite this, Herta persisted and began writing.

Nikolaus Lenau High School in Timişoara, where Herta finished her secondary education in 1973, was a German-language high school. Despite the fact that her first language was German, she chose to major in Romanian while she was there.




Herta Müller married author Richard Wagner while still residing in Romania. In 1987, the pair relocated to West Berlin from Romania. They later divorced in 1990. Müller married Harry Merkle, her second husband, in 1988. The pair married following her previous marriage’s annulment. They have since relocated to Berlin.

Herta Muller Career

Herta Müller made her literary debut with the release of her first book, ‘Niederungen’, in 1982. (Nadirs). It is mostly an autobiographical collection of short stories set in rural Romania. Through these stories, she conveyed the repressive environment prevalent in the country throughout the mid-twentieth century.

However, the original Romanian edition of the book was heavily restricted. Undaunted, she arranged for the smuggling of one of the original copies to Germany. In 1984, Germany released a shortened but uncensored version of the book, and she instantly became a renowned author.

Additionally, she released her second book, ‘Drückender Tango’ (Oppressive Tango), in Romania in 1984. This novel shows a tiny German-speaking community similar to her own and discusses its corruption, bigotry, and persecution.

Müller was barred from releasing further works in Romania due to his opposition to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s authoritarian dictatorship. Additionally, she was constantly being spied on, harassed, and intimidated.




As a result, she and her author husband, Richard Wagner, planned to flee in 1985 but were denied permission. While she was still in Romania, she released her third book, ‘Der Mensch ist ein großer Fasan auf der Wel,’ from West Berlin in 1986. In 1989, the same novel was reissued in English as ‘The Passport, Serpent’s Tail’.

The couple was eventually permitted to go in 1987, although the date of departure was incorrectly stated as February 29, which did not occur.

They did, however, eventually escape Romania in 1987 and live in West Berlin, following a lengthy fight. This year also saw the publication of her fourth novel, ‘Barfüßiger Februar’ (Barefoot February) from West Berlin.

The next year, in 1988, she took a job as a guest professor at various German institutions and toured overseas in that capacity. Additionally, she held several honorary positions and was admitted to the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in 1995.

Simultaneously, she continued writing and has a total of around twenty-five titles to her credit, four of which are collections of poetry. Over twenty of her books have been translated into other languages.
