Ginuwine Biography

Elgin Baylor Lumpkin was born in Washington, D.C. on October 15, 1970. He is named after fellow D.C. native and NBA icon Elgin Baylor.

He graduated from Forestville High School (now known as Forestville Military Academy) in Forestville, Maryland, in 1989, and then earned an associate’s degree in paralegal studies from Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland.

Ginuwine’s parents died within a year of each other; his father committed suicide and his mother succumbed to cancer. Ginuwine battled grief and depression; he also considered suicide.

He sought counseling from his pastor, who steered him in a more positive direction. On his 2001 album The Life, he released the song “Two Reasons I Cry” about his parents’ deaths.

Ginuwine was married to Tonya M. Johnston, better known as Solé, a rapper. Ginuwine and Solé first met in June 1999 and began dating in October 1999. They were married in the Cayman Islands on September 8, 2003. They were Maryland residents. They are the parents of two daughters: Story Sarae Lumpkin (born March 29, 2001) and Dream Sarae Lumpkin (born November 1, 2002).

He is the father of Elgin, Jr. (born January 30, 1991), as well as four other children by three different women. Ginuwine announced in February 2009 that he has nine children, including Ramonda, Tiffany, Elgin, Ginel, Tahjair, Story, and Dream, as well as two stepchildren, Dejan and Cypress. He announced his separation from Solé in November 2014. On July 22, 2015, their divorce was completed.

Ginuwine Career

Ginuwine recorded his debut album, Ginuwine…The Bachelor, with the astoundingly imaginative Timbaland behind the decks and released it later that year. “Pony” peaked at number one on the R&B charts and at number six on the pop charts, and the album eventually achieved double-platinum status.

It spawned numerous further R&B singles over the next year, including “Tell Me Do U Wanna,” “I’ll Do Anything/I’m Sorry,” “Holler,” and “Only When Ur Lonely”; it also featured a rendition of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” by one of Ginuwine’s primary influences.

Following the album’s popularity, demand for Timbaland’s production talents increased exponentially, and Ginuwine established himself as a bonafide sex symbol.

He traveled extensively in promotion of The Bachelor and maintained his public profile in 1998 with his single “Same Ol’ G,” which was featured on Eddie Murphy’s Dr. Doolittle album. He also made his acting debut that year, in an episode of the CBS series Martial Law.

Ginuwine reappeared in early 1999 with his second album, 100 percent Ginuwine.

Again produced by Timbaland, it debuted at number five on the mainstream charts, spawned another huge crossover success in “So Anxious,” and achieved platinum certification. “What’s So Different?” and “None of Ur Friends Business” both charted on R&B radio, and another Ginuwine hero was covered, this time Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life.”

He followed it up with The Life in the spring of 2001, despite the losses of his father (by suicide) and mother (from cancer) within the same year. It was his first album to be produced by someone other than Timbaland.

Nonetheless, it was another chart-topper, debuting at number three and hitting platinum once more. Additionally, the ballad “Differences” – the album’s second single, following “There It Is” – became Ginuwine’s biggest mainstream hit to date, peaking at number four later that year.

Ginuwine made his feature film debut in 2002, starring as a slick R&B artist in the gender-bending basketball comedy Juwant to Mann. Ginuwine re-entered the Top Ten that summer with his duet with P. Diddy on “I Need a Girl, Pt. 2.”

Simultaneously, in a slightly odd event, authorities apprehended a Minnesota guy who had been impersonating the musician and bilking money from business acquaintances for several years.

Though he did not have as much success on the singles charts, his albums The Senior (2003) and Back II da Basics (2005) are both charted in the Top Five on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Even an unlawful bootleg, I Apologize, had a little impact on the music scene in 2007. After leaving the Sony family, the artist signed a distribution deal with Warner Bros.

A Man’s Thoughts debuted at number one on the R&B albums chart in 2009 and featured a reunion with Timbaland on the track “Get Involved.” His seventh studio album, Elgin, was preceded with January 2011 single “Batteries,” a dance hit on which he collaborated with Trina. He then collaborated with Tank and Tyrese on Three Kings, which was released in 2013 as TGT.
