Marchand is of Douglas (Afro- and Indo-Trinidadian ancestry) and Chinese-Trinidadian ancestry. Her uncle, Federico de la Asuncion, was one of the 265 people killed in the November 12, 2001, disaster of American Airlines Flight 587. She was engaged to a fellow rapper, Kurupt, from 1997 to 1999. She was engaged to Spragga Benz in 2001.
In 2000, she disclosed that she was depressed. She later underwent drug rehabilitation at Cornell University Medical College for treatment of opioid addiction, claiming she was unable to record or perform without resorting to morphine. Between May 2005 and June 2006, Foxy Brown suffered severe hearing loss.
She opted for a hearing aid and had someone tap rhythms on her shoulder while recording music. Additionally, she has a lengthy history of violence and intimidation.

In 1996, she signed with Def Jam and released her debut album, Ill Na Na, on November 19, 1996. The RIAA certified the album platinum, and it has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
Additionally, she was a member of the hip hop supergroup The Firm, which included Nas, AZ, and Cormega (who was later replaced by Nature).
The Firm’s single album was released in 1997 on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records. Chyna Doll debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 in 1999, making her the second female rapper to do so, following Lauryn Hill in 1998.

Brooklyn Don Diva, her mixtape, was published in May 2008, and her visual album, King Soon Come, was scheduled for release in 2019 but has been postponed indefinitely.
