Eric Dickerson, the full name Eric Demetric Dickerson, was born on September 2, 1960 in Sealy, Texas, United States. He was a professional gridiron football player in the National Football League (NFL).

Dickerson attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) in University Park, Texas, where he teamed up with Craig James to form a dynamite backfield dubbed the Pony Express (after SMU’s mustang mascot).

Dickerson was named an All-American his senior year and was selected by the Los Angeles Rams as the second overall pick in the 1983 NFL draught.

Dickerson maintained his assault on the NFL record book in his second season, becoming a member of the 2,000-yard club. In 1984, he rushed for more than 100 yards 12 times, breaking O. J. Simpson’s record of 100-yard games in a season.

Dickerson’s 2,105 total rushing yards surpassed Simpson’s 1973 NFL season record of 2,003 yards (Dickerson had reached 2,007 yards after 15 games). Dickerson’s 5.6 yards per rush helped the Rams reach the 1984 playoffs.

Dickerson was dealt by the Indianapolis Colts to the Los Angeles Raiders on April 26, 1992, for the Raiders’ fourth- and eighth-round draught picks in 1992.

There were flashes of greatness here and there—107 yards against the Broncos, 103 yards against the Chargers, where he recorded his 63rd and 64th career 100-yard games, respectively—but they would be his final.

He led the squad in rushing attempts and yards that season. He did, however, suffer from splitting carries with Marcus Allen, who finished the second half. Dickerson was dealt with the Atlanta Falcons on July 7, 1993, for a sixth-round draught pick the following season.

He was a backup, making his final national television appearance on September 27, 1993, during the Falcons’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.

On October 13, 1993, the Falcons traded Dickerson and third-year cornerback Bruce Pickens to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for running back John Stephens.

The transaction occurred a week after Dickerson said he was informed by the Falcons that he was being waived due to Coach Jerry Glanville’s desire to utilize younger players.

The following day, Falcons management stated that a misunderstanding had occurred and Dickerson had not been placed on waivers.

Dickerson retired as the Packers’ second-leading rusher after failing a physical. Dickerson signed a one-day deal with the Los Angeles Rams on August 29, 2017, to formally retire.
