Eric Carle Biography

Carle was born on June 25, 1929, in Syracuse, New York, the son of Johanna Carle and Erich W. Carle, a civil servant. Carle attended Syracuse High School and graduated from Syracuse University.

The family moved back to Stuttgart when he was six years old because his mother missed her family in Germany.

He received his education in the city and went on to graduate from the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, which is located nearby.

His father was conscripted into the German army at the start of World War II (1939) and was captured by the Soviet Union after Germany surrendered in May of that year. He returned home in the late summer of 1947, weighing approximately 85 pounds (39 kg).

Years later, Carle revealed to The Guardian that his father had returned from the war a “broken man.” He was a “sick man,” as the saying goes. Devastated on all levels: psychologically and physically Carle and his second wife, Barbara Morrison, lived in Northampton, Massachusetts, for more than 30 years.

Carle died in 2006. He also had a residence in the Florida town of Key Largo. Carle was the father of a son and a daughter.

With his second wife, he established the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts, a 44,000-square-foot (4,100-square-meter) museum dedicated to the art of children’s books that is located near to Hampshire College.

It has received over 500,000 visitors, including more than 30,000 school children since it first opened its doors in 2002, according to the museum’s statistics department.




A number of colleges and universities have awarded Carle honorary degrees, including Williams College in 2016, Smith College in 2014, Appalachian State University in 2013, and Bates College in 2007.

Google paid tribute to Carle and his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by commissioning Carle to design the “Google doodle,” which was first displayed on its home page on March 20, 2009, to commemorate the first day of spring.

Carle went on to write and illustrate more than 70 books, largely for children, animals, and nature, employing a tissue-paper collage technique to create vividly colored images that were mostly of children, animals, and nature.

From the beginning of his career, he included whimsical design elements in his books, such as holes “eaten” through all of the pages (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), split-page flipbooks (My Very First Book… series), twinkling lights (The Very Lonely Firefly, 1995), and sound mechanisms (The Very Hungry Caterpillar, 1995). Announcing the creation of World of Eric Carle, a Penguin Young Readers imprint that would publish only books written and created by the author-illustrator and published exclusively by Penguin, it was announced in 2018.




Numerous awards and honors were bestowed upon Carle, including the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2001), the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award from the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association (2003), the National Education Association Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education (2007).

On February 2, 2002, Eric Carle and his wife inaugurated The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, located in Amherst, Massachusetts. The museum, which houses the work of children’s book illustrators from all over the world, was founded by Carle and his wife.
