Dr. Dre Biography

Dr. Dre was born Andre Romelle Young in Compton, California on February 18, 1965, to Theodore and Verna Young.  He attended a variety of schools throughout his academic career, including Vanguard Junior High School, Roosevelt Junior High School, Fremont High School, and later Chester Adult School.

During his college years, he sought to enroll in a Northrop Aviation Company apprenticeship program but was denied due to his continually bad grades. As such, he shifted his focus to music.

When Dre was only 17, he fathered a son, Curtis Young. Curtis Young met his father for the first time 20 years later, when Curtis became the rapper Hood Surgeon. Andre Young Jr., his second son, was born from his union with Jenita Porter, despite the fact that the two never married.

He dated Michelle from 1990 until 1996, with whom he has a son, Marcel.  Truice is the couple’s son, and Truly is the couple’s daughter. Dre’s anti-violence lyrics weren’t restricted to music. His first foray into music was as a DJ at a local club called The Eve After Dark. It was around this time period that he adopted the moniker Dr. Dre, which he has retained throughout his career. Dre began his musical career in 1984 as a member of the band World-Class Weckin’ Cru.

The trio quickly dominated the West Coast’s electro-hop scene, with their first hit, ‘Surgery,’ selling over 50,000 copies in Compton alone.




In 1986, he co-founded the local gangster rap group N.W.A. with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and DJ Yella (Niggaz for Life). N.W.A focused on urban violence and gang culture. Their lyrics were blunt and direct, bringing a glimpse of real-life on the streets to mainstream America. N.W.A’s self-titled debut studio album, ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ was a chart-topper, selling more than 2 million copies.

Its first track, ‘Fuck Tha Police,’ delves into the tensions between black youth and law enforcement officers. Before disbanding in 1991, the group published its second album, ‘Efil4zaggin.’ He created Death Row Records with Sue Knight in 1991.

In 1992, he released his first song, ‘Deep Cover,’ which served as the film’s title theme. Additionally, the record marked the debut of rapper Snoop Dogg.

Dre launched his career in 1993 with the release of his debut album, ‘The Chronic.’ Its songs, ‘Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thing, ‘Let Me Ride, and ‘Fuck with Dre Day,’ revolutionized the music industry, transforming the album into a cultural phenomenon. For the early 1990s, the album’s G-funk sound dominated hip hop music.

Following his breakthrough as a rapper, he transitioned into the music industry as a producer. He produced Snoop Dogg’s self-titled first album, ‘Doggystyle,’ Tupac Shakur’s ‘All Eyez on Me,’ and a number of film tracks. He departed Death Row Records permanently in 1996, following a contractual dispute.

The next year, in collaboration with Interscope Records, he founded his own label, Aftermath Entertainment. His album ‘Dr. Dre Presents the Aftermath was released in November 1996. It included tracks by Aftermath artists as well as a Dre solo titled ‘Been There, Done That’.

The record was a rebuke to the much-publicized West Coast–East Coast hip-hop dispute and served as a send-off to gangster rap.

Dre produced three tracks on Eminem’s self-titled debut album, ‘The Slim Shady LP, in 1999. The album went on to sell four million copies in the United States alone, reviving Aftermath Entertainment’s fortunes. Dr. Dre’s second solo album, ‘2001,’ continued the success narrative by marking his grandiose return to gangster rap. The album was a big success.

Following the success of ‘2001,’ he began producing songs and albums for other artists such as Eminem and The D.O.C. In 2001, he recruited Truth Hurts to Aftermath, an R&B vocalist. He created 50 Cent’s initial big hit, ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, in 2003.

He co-produced four tracks on the album, including the chart-topping single ‘In Da Club’, alongside Eminem’s boutique label Shady and Interscope. He then produced several tracks for several rappers’ albums, including Young Buck, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, and Jay Z.

Apart from music, Dre has appeared in a number of films, his first being 1996’s ‘Set It Off. He then released ‘The Wash’ and ‘Training Day’. He has appeared in music videos as a guest. Dre’s multifaceted career reached a new high point in 2008 when he created his own line of headphones, dubbed ‘Beats by Dr. Dre’.

The lineup included in-ear, supra-aural, and circumaural headphones. In 2014, Apple Inc acquired the headphone brand for an estimated $3 billion.

His charitable endeavors include a $70 million gift to the University of Southern California alongside Jimmy Iovine to establish the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology, and the Business of Innovation. The academy’s mission is to develop emerging talent.
