David Mitchell Biography

David Mitchell was born on January 12, 1969, in Southport, Lancashire, England (now Merseyside). He attended Hanley Castle High School and the University of Kent, where he majored in English and American literature and minored in comparative literature before graduating with an M.A. in English and American literature in 1989.

Before returning to England to support his expectant wife, Mitchell spent a year in Sicily before moving to Hiroshima, Japan, where he taught English for eight years to technical students.

Keiko Yoshida, Mitchell’s wife, has a home in Ireland. They’re the parents of two kids. Since he battled with stammering as a youngster, Mitchell has been extensively involved in charitable work and charities that address the issue. He and his wife also translated a novel written in Japanese by a thirteen-year-old autistic kid, The Reason I Jump, into English.

David Mitchell Career

In Ghostwritten (1999), Mitchell’s debut novel, nine narrators narrate interlocking experiences from all over the world, including Okinawa, Mongolia, and pre-Millennial New York City. As a result, it was named a finalist for the Guardian First Book Award and received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Man Booker Prize finalist for number9dream (2001) and Cloud Atlas (2004, respectively).

Cloud Atlas, Mitchell’s debut novel, was a critical and commercial success. Critics lauded Mitchell’s last novel, Cloud Atlas, for its unusual structure as well as its narrative choices (more on this later). The novel Cloud Atlas was nominated for the Man Booker Prize and ultimately won.

A Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet was published in 2010, and Bone Clocks was published in 2014, and Slade House was published in 2015. According to Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people, Mitchell was one of them in 2007.




The cinematic adaptation of his book Cloud Atlas came out in 2012. The Voorman Problem, a short film based on number9dream and starring Martin Freeman, was nominated for a BAFTA in 2011.

He has also authored opera libretti in recent years. The Dutch Nationale Reisopera presented Wake in 2010, a play based on the 2000 Enschede fireworks tragedy and including music by Klaas de Vries. The English National Opera debuted his opera Sunken Garden, which he wrote with Dutch composer Michel van der Aa, in 2013.

In addition to many of Mitchell’s book jackets, the design team Kai and Sunny also created a number of Mitchell’s inside illustrations. Additionally, Mitchell has worked with the pair on two occasions, contributing two short tales to their exhibitions in 2011 and 2014.

The Bone Clocks, Mitchell’s sixth book, was released on September 2nd, 2014. To to Mitchell, the book has “dollopps of the bizarre in it” and is about “things between life and death,” according to The Spectator.

It was on the Man Booker Prize longlist for 2014 for The Bone Clocks. Mitchell’s book, ‘From Me Flows What You Call Time,’ was handed to the Future Library on May 28th, 2016, and was the second contribution to the project.
