Cordae Biography

Cordae was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on August 26, 1997. When he was ten years old, he relocated to Suitland, Maryland with his family. As a child, he was exposed to 1990s and 2000s rap music through his father, who would listen to artists such as Nas, Rakim, Big L, and Talib Kweli around Cordae, thereby helping him acquire a refined taste in music.

His career would subsequently be heavily influenced by the tunes he listened to with his father. He began composing rap tracks when he was fifteen years old. At first, it was just another pastime, something he did in his spare time.

Inspired by the endless hours he spent listening to old songs with his father, he would go online and conduct exhaustive searches for certain artists on YouTube in order to uncover additional music by those artists and “lose himself” in the recommended section.

He was linked with the independent music label N.A.G.E. at the time. He had previously worked on a few tracks and music videos, but this was his first mixtape. He eventually dropped out of college in 2018, claiming that the campus felt “larger than him.” He was a first-generation college student who enrolled to please his mother. He then traveled to Los Angeles, California, from Maryland. By early 2018, his desire in establishing a career as a hip-hop musician had skyrocketed.

Los Angeles has always had a robust hip-hop scene, and Cordae quickly immersed himself in it. While he was not releasing new songs at the time, he began associated with YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty, whom he met through Xbox Live.

He viewed Nahmir and Almighty as his brothers and was already nominally a member of the group. According to Cordae, the only thing preventing Nahmir and Almighty from appointing him as an official member of YBN was the fact that his social media handles remained under the name Entendre. As a result, he adopted the stage name YBN Cordae.

As YBN Cordae, he released the tune ‘Introduction to the World’ in May 2018 on WorldStarHipHop. It is a remix of Eminem’s 1999 song ‘My Name Is’. Later the same year, he released ‘Old Niggas,’ a reaction to J. Cole’s ‘1985’.

He also released two further singles in 2018: ‘Fighting Temptations’ and ‘Kung Fu. He performed freestyles over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DUCKWORTH’, Lil Pump’s ‘Esskeetit’, and Method Man & Redman’s ‘Da Rockwilder’ in June during an interview with the musical group L.A. Leakers.

Cordae’s performance video went viral, effectively presenting her to a larger audience.  This was, according to reports, his first stage appearance. They also performed at New York’s 2018 XXL Freshman Show, when Nahmir was inducted into the annual freshman class.

Cordae is scheduled to perform on Juice Wrld’s WRLD Domination tour in North America. The trip is scheduled to visit 28 cities. The tour will also feature Lil Mosey and Blake. He is also scheduled to travel Europe as a member of YBN.
