Cortez Masto was born in the United States, in the city of Las Vegas. Joanna and Manny Cortez are her parents. Her father was the longstanding executive director of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, as well as a Clark County Commissioner and an attorney. Manny Cortez had a lengthy connection with Harry Reid, who is now deceased.

Krolicki’s accusations were eventually dropped in Clark County District Court.

Cortez Masto’s office began investigating Bank of America in 2010, accusing the corporation of increasing interest rates on clients who were in financial difficulties. Her agency wanted Nevada to withdraw from a loan modification deal so that it could sue the bank for fraudulent marketing and lending practises. Bank of America has categorically denied any wrongdoing.

In the case Sevcik v. Sandoval, Cortez Masto defended the state of Nevada. The lawsuit argued that Nevada’s refusal to allow same-sex marriage violated the state’s constitution and statute law. Following a judgement by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Cortez Masto and the state dropped their defence of the same-sex marriage ban.

In the 2014 election, Cortez Masto refused to run for governor of Nevada. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada backed her as his successor when he chose not to seek for reelection in 2016. Cortez Masto’s candidacy was primarily reliant on Reid’s political apparatus. U.S. Representative Joe Heck, a Republican, was her opponent.

The League of Conservation Voters endorsed Cortez Masto, who favours increasing expenditures in renewable energy technologies. End Citizens United, a political action committee working to defeat Citizens United v. FEC, and pro-choice organisations like EMILY’s List and Planned Parenthood also contributed to her campaign. Cortez Masto declared her reelection campaign for 2022 on February 24, 2021.
