Brian Lehrer was born in Queens and raised in the Bayside area. His parents met in high school after growing up in the South Bronx as children of Jewish immigrants from Poland.
Lehrer graduated from the State University of New York in Albany with bachelor’s degrees in music and mass communication. He hosted a radio show on the campus radio station WSUA, which has now become WCDB Albany, while a student there. Lehrer had radio shows in both Columbus, Ohio, and Norfolk, Virginia.
He graduated from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health with a master’s degree in public health and Ohio State University with a master’s degree in journalism. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Montclair State University in 2012.
Lehrer and his two boys, Nathan and Simon, will be living in Inwood in 2020. Victoria Ann Dennis, his wife, died in February 2014.
