Daniel Anthony Padilla was born in Sacramento, California, to parents who were just twenty and twenty-two years old, respectively. He is of Filipino ancestry, as his paternal grandmother was. Padilla’s parents divorced when he was just two years old, which he claims had little impact on him owing to his young age.

According to Padilla, he was an extremely reclusive child, owing in part to anxiety concerns that manifested when he received attention from others.

He has also stated that as a child, he wished to pursue a career in game design. Meanwhile, his mother remarried his then stepfather, and the couple eventually produced two kids; nevertheless, he abruptly departed the family.

Padilla began his YouTube career in 2005, co-creating the Smosh channel with YouTube co-founder and friend Ian Hecox. The couple initially shared lip-sync videos, a popular video format at the time in which celebrities lip-sync to a song while executing entertaining or humorous gestures.

Their first lip-sync videos, “Mortal Kombat Theme” and “Pokemon Theme,” earned widespread attention, with both making the YouTube FrontPage (a now-defunct feature similar in functionality to YouTube Spotlight).

He argued that his ideas had to pass through a filter and that being forced to accomplish whatever he was assigned rendered him incapable of expressing what he was thinking.

He yearned for the days when Smosh was essentially just him and Ian, with a great deal more creative license, which is one of the reasons why Smosh used to feature a lot more instances of people playing themselves rather than a different character.
