Andy Burnham Bio Data :

Andrew Burnham was born in Aintree, Lancashire, on January 7, 1970. Kenneth Roy Burnham worked as a telecommunications engineer, and Eileen Mary Burnham worked as a receptionist. He attended St Lewis Catholic Primary School in Culcheth and St Aelred’s Roman Catholic High School in Newton le Willows, St Helens. He went to Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam College to study English.

Burnham married Marie-France van Heel, a Dutchwoman, in 2000 after dating her since university. The couple has two daughters and a son.

Burnham entered the Labour Party when he was 14 years old, in 1984. He worked as a consultant for Tessa Jowell from 1994 to the 1997 general election. In 1995, he became a member of the Transport and General Workers’ Union. Following the 1997 election, he worked as a legislative officer for the NHS Confederation from August to December 1997, before joining the Football Task Force as an administrator for a year.

In 1998, he was appointed as a special assistant to Chris Smith, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, a role he held until his election to the House of Commons in 2001.

Following the resignation of Lawrence Cunliffe, Burnham ran for the electoral seat of Leigh in Greater Manchester, which was then a safe Labour seat. He was won with a majority of 16,362 votes in the 2001 election and made his first speech in the House of Commons on July 4, 2001.

Burnham served on the Health Select Committee after being elected to Parliament from 2001 to 2003, when he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Home Secretary David Blunkett. Blunkett became PPS to Ruth Kelly, the education minister, until his first departure in 2004.

He applauded Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock’s additional interventions in Greater Manchester and Lancashire after the COVID-19 pandemic in July, knowing that certain regions of North West England had lower outbreak rates than the rest of the world at the moment. Burnham and other North West politicians withdrew from government talks on including Greater Manchester in tier 3 – the most stringent stage – in a proposed three-tier categorization on October 15, 2020.
