Amjad Ali Khan Biography

Masoom Ali Khan was born on October 9, 1945, in Gwalior, India, as the youngest of seven children of court musician Hafiz Ali Khan and his wife Rahat Jahan.

His family is descended from the Bangash heritage, and Khan is the sixth generation of artists to play the sarod, which his family claims was invented by them. A sadhu changed his given name to Amjad, which he now uses. Khan was educated at home by his mother and father, who also taught him music.

In 1957, Hafiz Ali Khan was invited to be a guest by a cultural group in Delhi, and the Khan family relocated to the city. His training came from the descendants of Tansen, the legendary magician, and musician.

He was one of the ‘Nav-Ratna (nine gems) at the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, and he is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time.

As a result, Amjad descends from the lineage of Tansen. After Hafiz Ali Khan’s friends persuaded him of the significance of formal schooling for his son, Amjad was taken to visit the Principal of Modern School in New Delhi and was admitted as a day scholar there as a result.

It was in 1963 that Khan first performed in the United States, and he continued to do so with his sons until the year 2000. His entire professional life has been dedicated to experimenting with different modifications to his instrument.

In 2011, he appeared on Carrie Newcomer’s album Everything is Everywhere, on which he performed. In 2014, he performed ‘Raga For Peace’ at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, alongside his two kids, Ayaan Ali Khan and Amaan Ali Khan, as part of the Nobel Peace Prize Concert.

Khan received the 21st Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award, which was presented to him. Khan was awarded the Padma Shri in 1975, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2011.
