On July 13, 2013, after he shot a black teenager named Trayvon Martin as he walked home from a convenience store, a jury in Sanford, Florida acquitted George Zimmerman of murder charges. His assassination and eventual verdict caused demonstrations and outcry in the United States.

Alicia Garza, a black and queer political activist based in California’s Bay Area, took to Facebook to share her thoughts as the verdict came out. “She wrote “A Love Letter to Black People,” a series of posts that included her writing that “I continue to be shocked at how little Black life matters… Avoid giving up on life in black.

In the comments on the post, Patrisse Cullors, a fellow activist who lived in Los Angeles and met Garza at a Black Leadership for Organizing and Integrity conference, updated and summed up the message: #BlackLivesMatter. Her friend wasn’t all that familiar with the site at the time.

“I thought it was a pound sign!” confessed Garza later. “She broke down what hashtags are to me. And that’s how #BlackLivesMatter was born.” They reached out to another fellow activist, Opal Tometi, who focused on immigration problems, the next day. Tometi started sharing #BlackLivesMatter on Twitter and Tumblr, setting up accounts for the new campaign and beginning to connect with the public. Seven years later, in the summer of 2020, #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for tens of millions of Americans who burst into mass marches, seeking justice for police execution victims, an end to racial injustice and equality and equal justice.

#BlackLivesMatter wasn’t an instant phenomenon or rallying cry, but it’s now commonplace, used by politicians, actors, TV networks and businesses alike. In the second half of 2013, it was tweeted just 5,106 times, which averages out to about 30 times a day.
