Lauryn Hill Biography

Valerie and Mal Hill gave birth to Lauryn Hill on May 26, 1975, in Newark, New Jersey, United States. Her father worked as a computer and management consultant, and her mother taught English in a school setting.

She came from a middle-class family. Her mother played the piano, and her father sang, thus she grew up in a musical family. Her father used to perform at weddings and at local bars.

Hill’s singing ability made her popular in school. She attended ‘Columbia High School,’ and was a cheerleader there. She was a member of the school’s gospel choir and learned to play the violin.

She then started a band with Pras Michel, which was eventually joined by Michel’s cousin, Wyclef Jean. The group was originally known as the ‘Translator Crew,’ and they performed in neighborhood performances and high school talent shows.

Hill began her career as a vocalist before learning to rap. She also studied acting in Manhattan. Hill had a long-term romantic involvement with her bandmate Jean, which lasted even after he married Claudette.
