Terry Deary Biography

Deary was born in the North East city of Sunderland. Father Bill had a butcher’s business in Hendon, a low-income neighborhood of the city, while mother Freda worked as a manager of a clothes store in the same neighborhood.

Deary attended Monkwearmouth Grammar School, where he was quite dissatisfied with the whole experience, especially with the manner in which he was taught.

He worked as a butcher’s kid for most of his boyhood, beginning at the age of three and continuing to this day. After graduating from high school, he began working for the energy board as a management trainee. He subsequently joined the Theatre Powys theatre group in 1972, and as an actor, he toured Welsh village halls, introducing theatre to youngsters.

He received his teaching certification from Sunderland’s College of Education, where he also taught theatre. In the years 1975 to 1977, he worked as the Theatre Director/County Drama Advisor at the Lowestoft Theatre Centre in Suffolk, which was a community-based educational organization supported by the Suffolk County Council.

He started writing in 1976, and with the launch of the Horrible Histories series in 1994, he made the transition to full-time writing.

Terry Deary Career

Deary is a vocal opponent of schools, believing that they serve no purpose other than to keep youngsters off the streets. Deary has made the following comment: “Schools are not something I am interested in. They are no longer relevant in the twenty-first century.

They were conceived as a Victorian means of removing children from the streets. Who made the decision that placing 30 children with just their age in common in a classroom with one instructor was the most effective method of learning them? I was in a class with 52 other students, and all I learned was how to pass the 11-plus exam at my school.

Testing is the death knell of educational progress. Children should be dismissed from school at 11 a.m. and sent to work. Working with computers or doing anything meaningful is preferable to going into the mines or up chimneys. It was a waste of time to study anything after 11 o’clock.

Trigonometry, Boyle’s law, and all the rest of it have never been of any value to me. They should have been teaching me the life skills I would need in the future, such as how to create relationships, be a good father, and manage my finances.

I had no idea about any of these things when I was 18 years old. Schools must undergo transformation.” Deary has also argued for the “banishment of Horrible Histories from schools,” claiming that “classrooms take away all of the joy from his tales.”

On the subject of public libraries, Deary said that they “have been around for too long,” are “no longer relevant,” and have “had their day.” She also criticized the Public Lending Right, which compensates authors for library loans.

He made the following argument: “At the cost of writers, publishers, and council taxpayers, we’ve developed this notion that we have a right to read books for free… We do not anticipate having to visit a food library in order to get fed.

If we all went to car libraries and used Porsches for free, the automobile industry would collapse… If I were to sell the book, I would get 30p for every book sold. I receive six thousand, while I should be earning £180,000, according to the law.”

The Horrible Histories series of books are popular among children for its intriguing details, a massive amount of knowledge, and amusing illustrations, as well as among adults for its ability to pique children’s interest in historical figures and events.

Book series titles have been extensively translated into various languages and adapted for film and television.

A cartoon series based on the series of novels was produced and shown on CiTV in 2002, and it is still running. Since 2009, CBBC has broadcast the live-action comedic sketch program Horrible Histories, which is based on a book of the same name. Deary himself has made sporadic appearances on the program in the past.

In 2000, Deary was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education by the University of Sunderland, which he had previously attended. He is a fan of the Sunderland Football Club. After 35 years of creating children’s books, he decided to call it quits in 2011.

He and his wife Jenny, as well as their daughter Sara, reside in Burnhope, County Durham, in the United Kingdom.
