Larry Elder Biography

Larry Elder was born in Los Angeles on April 27, 1952, and grew up in the Pico-Union and South Central neighborhoods. He is Randolph and Viola Conley Elder’s second son. The family resided in the mostly Latino Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles at the time. Randolph, Elder’s father, was self-sufficient from the age of 13 and performed a variety of occupations. During World War II, he joined the military and served as a chef in the Philippines.

Elder attended Washington Preparatory High School, Crenshaw High School, and Brown University, where he received his B.A. in political science in 1974. In 1977, he received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He went on to work for a legal firm in Cleveland, Ohio, where he practiced litigation after graduation. Laurence A. Elder and Associates, a firm that recruits lawyers, was established by him in 1980.

Elder started hosting a topic-oriented television program on PBS station WVIZ created by Dennis Goulden when he was a lawyer in Cleveland in the late 1980s. The Larry Elder Show was renamed in the early 1990s and transferred to the local Fox Network station WOIO and cable TV. In 1992, Goulden and Elder received the Ohio Cable Television Association’s “Best Program Series Award” for their efforts on the programme, which ran until Elder returned to Los Angeles in 1994.

Elder was the presenter of Warner Brothers Television’s court series Moral Court from 2000 to 2001. He started the television version of The Larry Elder Show in September 2004, but it was cancelled on April 12, 2005, due to poor ratings. Elder was featured on 60 Minutes and 20/20, and when Geraldo Rivera was on vacation, he filled in for him on CNBC’s Rivera Live.

He hosted the PBS show National Desk, where he received an AEGIS Award of Excellence, a Telly Award, and an Emerald City Gold Award of Excellence for the piece “Redefining Racism: Fresh Voices From Black America.” In 2000, Elder received a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award for his program Making Waves – LAUSD on KCAL-TV News. On the sitcoms Spin City and The Hughleys, he portrayed himself.




He writes for Creators Syndicate as a columnist. Investor’s Business Daily, World Net Daily, Townhall.com, Jewish World Review, David Horowitz’s FrontPage Magazine, and The Atlasphere all publish Elder’s print and online columns.

Elder’s program was nationally syndicated by ABC Radio Networks and its news-talk network, ABC News & Talk, from 2002 until 2007. Elder was one of the rotating talk show hosts vying for the spot left vacant by MSNBC’s now-defunct Imus in the Morning. Elder was reported to be publicly seeking a permanent job after his audition on May 7 and 8. Joe Scarborough, on the other hand, was given the position.

The premiere episode of Showdown with Larry Elder aired on Fox News Channel on July 5, 2008. The program was not picked up by a network.

Elder stated on December 11, 2008, that the next day, December 12, would be his last day on KABC. Beginning in December 2009, Elder started a daily live podcast as well as a webcast. Elder began charging for his podcasts in late March 2011. Previously, they were accessible for free on the KABC website. Elder returned to KABC on September 27, 2010, presenting weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon. He was back in his usual afternoon spot in no time.
