Wendy Joan Williams was born on July 18, 1964, in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Shirley (née Skinner), a special education teacher, and Thomas Dwayne Williams, an English teacher, and school administrator, had her as the second of three children.

The pair pooled their three master’s degrees and traveled the world, frequently purchasing items to decorate their home. In 1970, the family relocated to Ocean Township, New Jersey’s upper-middle-class suburban hamlet of Wayside.
