Her parents, Helen and Milton Williams, both music professors, welcomed her into the world on March 18, 1963, in Tarrytown, Greenburgh, New York. Vanessa and her brother were raised in a cozy house in the suburbs of New York City.

Vanessa performed in school plays and signed her yearbook with a pledge to “see you on Broadway” when she graduated high school.

Having won a performing scholarship to Syracuse University, she decided to leave the university and pursue a career in the entertainment industry in New York City afterward.




In 1984, she began competing in beauty pageants, winning Miss New York and subsequently becoming the first African-American Miss America. Nude images of females obtained when she was in New York were published in Penthouse magazine during her reign.
