Too Short Biography
Shaw was born and raised in Los Angeles. He and his family relocated to Oakland, California, in the early 1980s. He was a drummer in the band at Oakland’s Fremont High School.
In the mid-1980s, Shaw and a high school classmate, Freddy B, created personalized songs (dubbed “special requests”) for residents of Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area.
Too Short began his solo career in 1985 with the release of Don’t Stop Rappin’ on Oakland’s 75 Girls Records And Tapes.
The album, along with four 12″ singles, featured raw, simplistic drum sounds from a LinnDrum drum machine.
This was also one of the earliest hip hop tracks to feature the term “bitch” – a term that became a trademark for the rapper and was the subject of following raps such as “Ain’t Nothin’ but a Word to Me.”

Too Short Career
In the early 1990s, he generated most of his own beats using a TR-808; from the mid-to-late 2000s, he used a TR-909. Too Short and Freddie B. founded the label Dangerous Songs in 1985 to market his music regionally, and later formed the rap group the Dangerous Crew with others.
Dangerous Music evolved into Short Records, which morphed into Up All Nite Records. With his 1988 CD, Life Is…
Too Short, he began incorporating established funk riffs into his rhythms rather than sampling them. Subsequent work included collaborations with Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Scarface, and Pimp C.
One of his major collaborations during this time period was on the Notorious B.I.G. album Life Following Death’s track “The World Is Filled…”; he appears on the third stanza after Diddy and Biggie.
Being featured on the record also presented him to a larger audience, as his regular aesthetic contrasted sharply with the album’s Mafia theme. Additionally, he participated in TWDY’s chart-topping single “Player’s Holiday” from their 1999 debut album Dirty Werk, as well as the Priority Records collection Nuthin but a Gangsta Party.
Following these appearances, he began work on Can’t Stay Away, his eleventh studio album. 8Ball & MJG, Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Sean Combs, E-40, Daz Dillinger, Lil Jon, Soopafly, Scarface, and B-Legit all made cameo appearances on the album.
Too Short relocated to Atlanta in 1994 but did not begin collaborating with a broader range of Southern artists until 2000 when he teamed up with Lil Jon. Too Short returned from retirement in 1999 with the release of Can’t Stay Away, continuing his sexually graphic, easygoing style of rap.
He Married to the Game (2003) were the new albums released between 2000 and 2003. (2003). These albums all charted rather well, finishing in the top 71 of the Billboard 200, although they did not perform as well as Too Short’s previous 1990s offerings, with none reaching the top ten.
Too Short’s subsequent album, Blow the Whistle (2006), capitalized on the new hyphy rap music coming from his original Oakland home base. This marked a renaissance for Too Short, as the album peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200, significantly higher than any of his previous three releases.
His later efforts, such as 2007’s Get Off the Stage, have not met with the same popularity. On October 7, 2008, VH1 honored Too Short alongside Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick, and Naughty By Nature at the fifth annual “Hip-Hop Honors.” Too Short collaborated with Daz Dillinger, Lil Jon, Soopafly, Scarface, and B-Legit in 2009.
In 2011, Wiz Khalifa featured the rapper on his song “On My Level.” He also contributed to the song “Take U Home” on Snoop Dogg’s 2011 album Doggumentary, as well as on the 50 Cent song “First Date.”
In 2012, Too Short and E-40 released two collaborative albums named History: Mob Music and History: Function Music on the same day.
Both albums debuted in the Billboard 200’s top 100. Too Short has stated that the best verse he has ever recorded is for the song “Man’s Best Friend (Pussy)” on Dr. Dre’s Detox. He collaborated with Lady Gaga on the song “Jewels n’ Drugs” for her upcoming album Artpop in 2013. T.I. and Twista are also featured on the track.
Too Short was featured on the song “Oakland Brookfield Dance” by actor Tavion Tate Guice in 2015. Too Short was featured on the Argentine-American rapper Dumbfoundead’s 2016 song “Cochino.” The song is taken from Dumbfoundead’s fifth studio album, We Might Die.
