Michael Braxton and Evelyn Braxton gave birth to Toni Braxton on October 7, 1967, in Severn, Maryland. Because her father was a minister, she grew up in an extremely religious household.

Braxton and her four older sisters began singing in their father’s church when they were very young. However, they were allowed to listen to artists like Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, who were not allowed to partake in popular culture.

On WE tv’s “Braxton Family Values” in 2011, Braxton was a part of a documentary on the family’s interpersonal ties.
