Tina Turner was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939. Her father was a sharecropper overseer. Turner was separated from her parents during WWII and had to live with her grandparents in Knoxville.

She returned home after the war and attended Flagg Grove Elementary School. Turner was a natural singer who grew up in the church choir.

Turner’s childhood was a mess when her mother fled her abusive father. He remarried at 13 and abandoned her and her sister. She moved in with her grandma and worked as a maid. She went to Carver High School with her grandmother.

Turner had to move in with her mother when she was 16. She attended Summer High School in Missouri and wanted to be a nurse.

Tina Turner used to go to St. Louis clubs. She met Ike Turner and his band Kings of Rhythm at Club Manhattan. In 1958, Ike saw her aptitude and invited her to record as a background vocalist.

She gave Juggy Murray, owner of Sue Records, a dummy vocal for Ike’s song in 1959. Ike was paid handsomely for the song’s recording and publishing rights.

Together, Tina Turner and Ike Turner released A Fool in Love in 1960, which hit #2 on the Hot R&B Sides. This song got them their first Grammy nomination. In 1964, the duo signed with Loma Records, a Warner Bros. Records subsidiary. They did live events all around the US and appeared on shows like Hollywood’s A-Go-Go.

In 1966, she recorded River Deep – Mountain High for Philles Records. Turner was invited to open for The Rolling Stones on their UK tour because of the song’s success.

Turner and Ike’s albums like Outta Season and The Hunter were popular at the time. Their show was a hit in Vegas. Celebrities like Elvis Presley and Elton John went.

Tina Turner signed the rights to the film What’s Love Got to Do with It in 1993. In addition, she taught the female protagonist dance skills. In 1995, she collaborated with U2 on a song for the James Bond film GoldenEye. Then came Wildest Dreams, which went gold and platinum in the US and Europe.
