Katherine Swinton was born in London on 5 November 1960. Her father John Swinton was a military general and Judith Balfour was her mother. She’s got three siblings.

She studied at three different institutions, one of which was a costly West Heath Girls’ School boarding school. She subsequently described her school experience as unpleasant, saying that boarding schools are really harsh and that students don’t gain from this type of atmosphere.

She then studied in New Hall at the University of Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) where she graduated in social and political science in 1983. She joined the Communist Party around this period and afterward the Scottish Socialist Party. During this era, she also began to perform on stage.

She appeared over the following years in movies including “Adaptation” (2002), “Young Adam” (2003), “Constantine” (2005), “Stephanie Daley” (2006), and “The Man from London” (2007).

She was a financial and critical hit in the legal thriller ‘Michael Clayton’ (2007). The film was directed by Tony Gilroy and nominated for seven Oscars, including the best picture. Swinton’s only victory was in the category of ‘Best Supporting Actress.’ She was also awarded the “Best Supporting Actress” BAFTA Award.

She had the leading part in the crime movie ‘Julia’ in 2008. In ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ she next had a supporting part which was a commercial success and it was mainly received favourable reviews.
