Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 2, 1908. William Marshall, his father, was the grandson of an enslaved person who worked as a steward at an exclusive club, and Norma Marshall, his mother, was a kindergarten teacher.
Listening to trials at the local courthouse before returning home to rehash the lawyers’ claims with his sons was one of William’s favourite pastimes. Thurgood later reflected on the incident, saying, “Do you want to know how I ended up in the legal profession? I’m not sure. My best guess is that my father, brother, and I had one of the most ferocious fights you’ve ever heard over anything. I guess we fought at the dinner table five out of seven nights.”
Marshall was an above-average student at Baltimore’s Colored High and Training School (later renamed Frederick Douglass High School), where he used his finely honed argumentative skills as a standout member of the debate team. Marshall was a mischievous adolescent who got into all kinds of mischief. He memorised the entire United States Constitution as a punishment for misbehaving in class.
Marshall attended Lincoln University, a historically Black college in Pennsylvania, after graduating from high school in 1926. He entered a prestigious student body that included future Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah, poet Langston Hughes, and jazz singer Cab Calloway.
