Ted Cruz (Politician) Biography
Ted Cruz was born on December 22, 1970, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson and Rafael Cruz were his parents. Eleanor Wilson was born in the Delaware city of Wilmington. She is three-quarters Irish and one-quarter Italian, and she graduated from Rice University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in the 1950s.
Cruz’s father was born and reared in Cuba, the son of a Canary Islander who emigrated to Cuba as a youngster when he was a youngster. He was assaulted by Fulgencio Batista’s operatives as a youngster in the 1950s for protesting the Batista government. He fled Cuba in 1957 to attend the University of Texas in Austin, and after his four-year student visa expired, he sought political asylum in the United States. In 1973, he became a Canadian citizen, and in 2005, he became a naturalised US citizen.
Ted Cruz’s parents had resided in Calgary for three years and were working in the oil industry as proprietors of a seismic-data processing firm for oil drilling at the time of his birth. Cruz is the son of “two mathematicians/computer programmers,” according to his biography. Cruz’s father left the family in 1974 and relocated to Texas. Cruz’s parents reunited after that year and moved the family to Houston. In 1997, they divorced. Cruz has two elder half-sisters from his father’s first marriage, Miriam Ceferina Cruz and Roxana Lourdes Cruz. Miriam passed away in 2011.
Cruz attended Faith West Academy near Katy, Texas, and Second Baptist High School in Houston, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1988. Cruz was a member of the Free Market Education Foundation, a Houston-based organisation that taught high school students the ideologies of economists such as Milton Friedman and Frédéric Bastiat throughout his high school years.
Cruz earned a Bachelor of Arts in public policy from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1992. He participated for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel during his time at Princeton, winning the top speaker prize in both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.
He was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year in 1992, as well as Team of the Year by the American Parliamentary Debate Association, together with his debate partner David Panton. Cruz and Panton later competed for Harvard Law School in the 1995 World Debating Championship, when they were defeated in the semifinals by an Australian team. The yearly novice debate championship at Princeton is named after Cruz. Cruz was a Colonial Club member at Princeton.
Cruz attended Harvard Law School after graduating from Princeton, earning a Juris Doctor degree magna cum laude in 1995. He was a founding editor of the Harvard Latino Law Review, an executive editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, and a key editor of the Harvard Law Review while at Harvard Law. Professor Alan Dershowitz remarked of Cruz’s time as a Harvard Law student, “Cruz was off-the-charts bright.” Cruz was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law and Economics at Harvard Law School.
On May 27, 2001, Cruz married Heidi Nelson. Caroline and Catherine are their two daughters. Cruz and Bush met while Cruz was working for George W. Bush’s presidential campaign in 2000.

Ted Cruz Career
In 1995 and 1996, Cruz worked as a law clerk for J. Michael Luttig of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and William Rehnquist, the Chief Justice of the United States.
Cruz worked with Cooper, Carvin & Rosenthal, currently known as Cooper & Kirk, PLLC, from 1997 to 1998 after completing his clerkships. Cruz worked at the company on issues involving the National Rifle Association and assisted in the preparation of testimony during President Bill Clinton’s impeachment hearings. Cruz temporarily represented Representative John Boehner in his lawsuit against Representative Jim McDermott in 1998 over the alleged release of an unlawful recording of a phone call in which Boehner was a participant.
In 1997, Michael Wayne Haley was charged with stealing a calculator from Walmart. Haley was sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in prison under the Texas chronic offender legislation because of his past felony offences. The case was eventually remitted to lower courts due to Haley’s allegation of inadequate aid of counsel.
Through oral argument, Cruz acknowledged that Haley had a solid case for ineffective assistance of counsel since her attorney failed to detect the sentencing mistake, but said he would not seek to re-incarcerate Haley during the appeal process. Haley was re-sentenced to “time served” after being remanded.
Cruz was named one of the 50 Best Litigators Under 45 in America by American Lawyer magazine in 2008, and one of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America by The National Law Journal. He was designated one of the 25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter Century by Texas Lawyer in 2010.
