Tammy Baldwin is an American attorney and politician who has served as the Senator from Wisconsin since January 2013. She was a Democrat who served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 78th district, and three terms in the United States House of Representatives, representing Wisconsin’s 2nd congressional district from 1999 to 2013.

Tammy Baldwin was born on February 11, 1962, in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. Baldwin was born while her mother, who passed away in 2017, was 19 years old and undergoing a divorce. Baldwin was raised by her grandparents and spent Saturdays with her mentally ill mother, who suffered from an opiate addiction as well. Her maternal grandfather was David E. Green, a Jewish scientist, and her maternal grandmother was an Anglican born in England. Baldwin’s aunt is Rowena Green Matthews, a biologist. Baldwin is Andy Samberg’s third cousin through her maternal grandparents.

She graduated from Madison West High School in 1980. She earned a B.A. from Smith College in 1984 and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1989. She worked as a private lawyer from 1989 until 1992.

Baldwin entered politics for the first time at the age of 24, when she was elected to the Dane County Board of Supervisors, a position she held until 1994. She also served a one-year term on the Madison City Council to fill a vacancy in a neighbouring district.

State Assemblyman Mark Pocan, who had already succeeded her in the state legislature, took her place in Congress.

Baldwin was elected to the US Senate in 2012, defeating Republican candidate Tommy Thompson. Baldwin was re-elected in 2018, defeating Republican candidate Leah Vukmir.
