Kweli was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and grew up in a family in the Park Slope neighborhood. Adelphi University employs his mother, Brenda Greene, who teaches English at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York, and his father, who works as an administrator at the university.

Jamal Greene, his younger brother, is a professor of constitutional law at Columbia Law School.

He is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, as well as a former law clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens on the United States Supreme Court. Kweli was influenced by Afrocentric rappers such as De La Soul and other members of the Native Tongues Posse, whom he met while attending high school.

At the time, Kweli was attending Cheshire Academy, a boarding school located in Connecticut. His earlier schooling was at Brooklyn Technical High School, where he was a student. Later, at New York University, he pursued a degree in experimental theatre.

In 2014, Res, a previous collaborator of Kweli’s, was providing a song featuring Kweli, without his consent, in exchange for donations from fans on a crowdfunding website called Kickstarter. In 2018, Res shared screenshots of Kweli apologizing for attempting to kiss her on her Instagram account, where she received a lot of attention.

She further alleged that Kweli was holding her professional future hostage since she had refused his sexual approaches. Judge Carolyn Wade finally ruled against the plaintiffs and dismissed the case.

During the summer of 2020, Kweli was accused of harassing a Twitter user, Maya Moody, after Moody expressed her desire to call out Talib, as well as other prominent players in the music industry, for solely dating or marrying light-skinned black women.

Moody sent out a message on Twitter that was not explicitly addressed at Kweli because he was not specifically mentioned in her post. Kweli revealed on his Instagram account on July 23 that he was quitting Twitter “for the fresh pastures of Patreon.”

Kweli made his début in 1997, with five appearances on Doom, an album by the Cincinnati, Ohio band Mood, which was released the same year.

In Cincinnati, Kweli met Hi-Tek, with whom he collaborated on a few underground albums under the moniker Reflection Eternal, including “Fortified Live” (1997) and “B-Boy Document 99/Chaos” (1998), among other projects (1999, featuring The High & Mighty).

With his newly created Blacksmith Records, Kweli released a mixtape CD titled Right About Now: The Official Sucka Free Mix CD in 2005. The title is often regarded as a response to the negative reception that The Beautiful Struggle had received at the time.

Gutter Rainbows, Kweli’s fourth solo album, was the first to be published by his newly created Javotti Media label, marking the artist’s debut in the music industry.

Gutter Rainbows was originally intended to be a digital-only release; however, on November 16, 2010, Duck Down Records announced that it would be releasing the album on CD in countries other than the United States.

Fuck The Money was released in the summer of 2015, and it featured guest appearances from members of Fall Out Boy, Miguel, Styles P, and others. Awful People Are Great at Parties, a compilation mixtape comprising Javotti Media’s developing artists, was released in November 2016 to promote the label’s artists.

Moreover, he indicated that he intends to reunite with Madlib to deliver Liberation 2 and with Mos Def to offer a sophomore Black Star album.
