Shelley Moore Capito was born in Glen Dale, West Virginia, on November 26, 1953, to Shelley and Arch Alfred Moore Jr., the state’s governor for three years. Capito, a native of Charleston, attended the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, where he received his education.

She received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from Duke University and her master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia Curry School of Education. She is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was the 1972 Cherry Blossom Princess for West Virginia. Capito began her work as a career counsellor at West Virginia State University and the head of the West Virginia Board of Regents’ educational information department.

Capito is married to Charles L. Capito, with whom he has three children: Charles, Moore, and Shelley. Her father was sentenced to almost two years in jail for corruption. Lucy Moore Durbin, along with her husband, was arrested in 1992 for selling cocaine to an undercover cop. Capito and the Moore Capito family are members of the Presbyterian Church in America’s First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, West Virginia (USA).

Capito was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates from Kanawha County in 1996 and served two terms, from 1996 to 2000.

Capito launched her campaign for the United States Senate in 2014 on November 26, 2012, with the intention of challenging Democratic incumbent Jay Rockefeller, who later announced his retirement. Capito won 87 percent of the Republican primary vote and defeated Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant in the general election, 62 percent to 34 percent, despite initial concerns from Tea Party organisations and anti-establishment conservatives that her House voting record was “too liberal.”

According to a research by DW-NOMINATE, Capito was one of the three most moderate Republican senators in 2017, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post.
